A black sweatshirt can work for a relaxed holiday dinner when the invitation allows casual clothing. Start with a clean, comfortable fit, then use trousers, shoes and one considered detail to bring the outfit together.

1. Tailored trousers and simple shoes

Pair a crew-neck sweatshirt with charcoal or dark navy trousers and loafers or ankle boots. A small embroidered motif gives the outfit a focal point without needing several accessories. Let the hem sit naturally rather than forcing a bulky sweatshirt into the waistband.

2. Dark jeans and an open coat
